Tummy to Tummy

Newborn and Older

Although this position can be used with a baby of any age, you must adjust the fabric accordingly. I have used the Maya Wrap to demonstrate how to wear your baby in the tummy-to-tummy position, but the steps are the same no matter what brand of ring sling you are using.

Step 1. Put your sling on. :) First you should decide which shoulder you want the sling to rest upon. Grasp the front of the rings with that hand, making sure the tail is hanging down in front. For the purposes of this illustration, I have chosen to rest the sling on my left shoulder. Then slip the sling over your other arm and head, resting it on your desired shoulder. Make sure the rings are approximately on or just below your collar bone, and the tail is hanging down in front of you.

Step 2. Prepare your sling to hold your baby. First, pull the excess fabric from behind you around in front of you.

Step 3. Place your baby in the sling. Place your baby down tummy-to-tummy with you. You should not have any fabric between you and your baby. Make sure that the bottom rail is tucked up around your baby's legs for support. If your baby lacks head control, bring the top fabric up around your baby's shoulders, neck, and head enough to support her. If your baby is older, make sure the fabric reaches at least halfway up her back. Tighten the fabric to ensure a secure ride for your baby.

Please don't let these instructions intimidate you. Once you get used to it, wearing your baby will be second nature. And putting your baby in the sling will take seconds!

Happy Slinging!
